Hooking up the trailer and heading to the mountains for the weekend?
Before you go, it’s worth asking: how do you actually protect your transmission while towing?
There are a couple of simple things every driver can do, and Troy from National Transmission walks through all of them on camera. You can watch the full video on towing and transmission protection here to see him explain it in person.
In this article, we’ll cover where to find your transmission temperature gauge, the danger zone you need to watch for, what tow/haul mode actually does, and the one habit that matters more than any gauge or setting.
Where to Find Your Transmission Temperature Gauge
Most vehicles let you dig into the dash and find a gauge summary buried in the vehicle information menu. Once you’re in there, you’ll typically see oil temperature, oil pressure, oil life, and battery voltage alongside your transmission temperature. It’s worth finding this screen before you’re towing, not while you’re already on the highway. Troy shows exactly where to look on his own dash in the full video.
Keeping an eye on your engine coolant temperature alongside your transmission temperature and engine oil temperature gives you a much clearer picture of how your vehicle is handling the load. It’s a small habit that pays off any time you’re towing.
The 220–240°F Danger Zone
Transmission fluid starts to break down at around 220–240°F. That’s the number to keep in the back of your mind any time you’re pulling a trailer.
Troy’s personal rule: if he sees the transmission temperature climb to around 212°F (100°C) while towing, he pulls over, puts the vehicle in neutral, and lets it cool back down before continuing. It’s a simple habit, but it’s the difference between a long-term healthy transmission and an expensive repair down the road.
What Tow/Haul Mode Actually Does
Most trucks come with a tow/haul mode, and it’s more than just a dashboard light. When it’s engaged, the engine and transmission strategies change in a few important ways:
- Shifts get longer, and the torque converter locks up sooner.
- On some vehicles, it will actually downshift to help engine-brake the trailer as you’re slowing down.
- It keeps the engine in the power band of the transmission, which makes towing easier overall.
- It stops the transmission from constantly cycling up and down between shifts, or the torque converter clutch from locking and unlocking repeatedly.
- It locks the torque converter up earlier and keeps it locked. A locked-up torque converter produces significantly less heat, which directly helps protect the transmission.
Troy breaks down each of these in more detail in the video, including why that reduced heat matters so much for the life of your transmission.
The Most Important Tip: Slow Down
Of everything covered, Troy is clear that the single most important habit is simply not rushing. Take your time, drive for safety, and give your vehicle a break when it needs one.
As he puts it, that cold beer waiting at the campsite can wait an extra five or ten minutes. Your transmission can’t always say the same, so a few extra minutes of patience on the road can save you a much bigger headache later.
