Built to Handle Big Power: Custom Transmission for a 7.3L Godzilla Swap

Whether you’re restoring a classic or building a modern performance truck, we have the expertise to build transmissions that handle more power, more torque, and more abuse.

In this latest project, we worked on a Ford 10R140 transmission build for a custom truck from @retro_motiveab, powered by the beefy 7.3L Godzilla V8.

This isn’t just a standard rebuild, but a complete transmission upgrade, combining aftermarket performance parts and precision assembly to handle serious horsepower.

What Is the 10R140 Transmission?

The 10R140 is a 10-speed automatic transmission developed by Ford for heavy-duty applications, including Super Duty trucks. It’s designed for strength, towing, and fuel efficiency, but when paired with high-output engines like the Godzilla 7.3L, it needs some help to keep up.

That’s where our custom performance build comes in.

10R140 Performance Upgrades: What We Installed

High-Stall Torque Converter (2400 Stall)

We started by upgrading to an aftermarket torque converter with a 2400 stall speed, which improves low-speed performance and drivability, especially once the engine is tuned. It’s a major step up from the stock converter, delivering smoother launches and better power delivery.

Six-Pinion P1 Planetary Gear Set

The stock 10R140 comes with a four-pinion planetary gear set, which works for factory power levels, but can become a weak point when pushing more torque.

We installed a six-pinion P1 planetary set to increase strength and reliability. This allows the transmission to distribute torque more evenly and prevents premature wear or failure under load.

Sonnax Solenoid Retainer Kit

The solenoid retainers on the 10R140 and 10R80 are known to wear out, causing solenoids to shift or move in the bore. That leads to erratic shifting, fluid leaks, and valve body wear.

Our upgraded Sonnax solenoid retainer kit keeps the solenoids firmly in place, protecting the valve body and improving long-term reliability.

2WD to 4WD Conversion

The original transmission was a 2WD unit, but the customer needed 4×4 capability. So, we swapped out the P4 planetary output shaft, replacing the short 2WD stub with a proper 4WD output setup.

This involved:

  • Modifying the internal planetary gear set

  • Replacing the output shaft

  • Configuring the case to accept a transfer case

SunCoast Frictions, Steels, and Pressure Plates

We used a full SunCoast clutch kit, including:

  • High-performance frictions and steels

  • Aftermarket pressure plates

  • Additional frictions for the CDF drum

These parts allow the transmission to hold more power, dissipate heat more effectively, and withstand harder shifts, which is exactly what’s needed when you’re running a high-output build.

A Note on Ford’s “New” Transmissions

Even some brand-new Ford transmissions don’t come with upgraded parts like the hardened outer shell or improved CDF drum. In this build, we found that the outer shell (“trash can”) was not hardened, even though it was a fresh transmission.

Even if you’re starting with a “new” unit, you might still be missing out on critical upgrades, so we check every component during teardown.

Step-by-Step: Full Transmission Disassembly & Rebuild

Here’s a look at the custom teardown & rebuild process:

  1. Tear down and inspect the entire transmission

  2. Replace the stock P1 planetary (4-pinion) with the 6-pinion upgrade

  3. Upgrade the CDF drum, adding extra frictions and seals

  4. Modify the E-clutch assembly and install new pressure plates

  5. Install SunCoast B frictions and check all clutch clearances

  6. Upgrade the valve body with the Sonnax solenoid retainers

  7. Stack and reassemble the P1–P4 planetary gears, outer shell, and clutches

  8. Final install of internal harness, oil pump, and deep PPE oil pan
